2007 Aggie Fall Regatta
November 03 , 2007
Texas A&M University
College Station, TX
Saturday provided light winds in the morning. The first races started
around 11am, with light shifty breeze around 5 knots. The wind
continued to shift all day long, causing numerous course changes.
Winds died and a short break was taken for lunch after six races in
each division were completed. Two more races were completed after the
breeze picked back up. Eight races were completed in each division on
W/L courses. A total of 3 protests were filed and settled.
Thank you to all members of the Texas A&M Sailing team that
volunteered their help. Thank you to our President Kimberly Kackley's
parents for bringing the RC boat. A final thank you to all the teams
who traveled far and wide to College Station, TX for the weekend. We
enjoyed your company on and off the water.
A final congratulations to USA and UT for qualifying for Charleston
Spring. Along with USA and UT, TAMUCC and TAMU qualify for the Sugar
Bowl Regatta.

Hey team,
Come out this Saturday for the last practice of the semester. Let's
enjoy this great Houston weather, relieve some exam stress, and get
one more day of sailing in before the break.
See you all at Baker at 9:30.

Hey sailors, some news:
- We have another mid-week meeting, our last of the semester, this Wednesday from 8-9 in Huma 327. We'll be watching a great instructional video that would be valuable for any experience level.
- We have practice again on Saturday. Meet at Baker at 9:30. There are only two practices left, so let's make the most of them.
Thanks, Garrett

Come one, come all, practice is on Saturday. Let's get out there while
we have the chance before the break. Meet in front of Baker at 9:30.

Hey team, several things:
- Results from Aggie Fall last weekend. Congratulations on a job well done for all who came.
- We will have practice this Saturday the 10th as usual. 9:30 in front of Baker.
- Starting this coming Wednesday the 14th, we will start a schedule of team meetings every other week. We will be using these times to learn skills, rules, and tactics as taught by senior members, outside volunteers and instructional videos. The first meeting is Wednesday from 8-9 PM (stay tuned for the location). If you have a problem making this time, let us know, because we want as many people as possible to be able to come.
See you Saturday.
Thanks,
Garrett

Hey team,
We have another practice this Saturday! There is more great coaching
lined up, so come on out as we prepare for A&M on the 3rd. A reminder
also to get those online registrations done soon if you plan to come
to the regatta. And for the many of you that were wondering because of
the other festivities on the night of the 3rd, we'll probably get back
from A&M by 7:30 or maybe 8 that evening.
I hope to see you Saturday at 9:30 in front of Baker.

After a short break, sailing practice is back! Meet this Saturday in front of Baker college at 9:30. We're going to have coaching available to help us get ready for the A&M regatta Nov 3. By the way, start thinking about whether or not you can make that regatta (all day, just the Saturday), and we'll take an accurate count in a week or so.

We have another practice this Saturday. Come on out whether or not you've been able to yet. We'll meet in front of Baker college on the inner loop at 9:30. Hope to see you there!

Rice Sailing Team,
We're getting close to the weekend, and that means it's time for more sailing! This Saturday is another practice and teaching session, so let's get plenty of people out on the water. We'll meet at 9:30 to carpool in front of Baker college on the inner loop. Please bring your
$15 club dues for the year if you haven't already. Also, if you have a car and are willing to drive, please let me know, as we might need you this week.
See you then,
Garrett

So, there's enough interest for us to run two start times. There will be people leaving from Baker at 8:00 and then again at 9:30 to carpool out to the yacht club. You're welcome to come either of the two times that fits your schedule. Two things:
1. If you have not yet replied, please tell me what time you plan to come so we can be sure to have the right number of drivers.
2. Please bring your dues if you have not paid. Club dues for the year are $15. This is a great deal for you, but we do need you to bring them in.
Thanks,
Garrett Tate

Sailing club members,
Last weekend was amazing! Thanks to all who were able to come out, and I hope to see even more of you this coming Saturday.
We will be having practice once again, which is perfect for all of you looking to learn or improve your skills. The time, however, is up to you. Because of the Rice vs. Texas Tech game at 2:00, some of our members expressed an interest in an earlier practice. If you have
interest, there are two options:
1. Leave Rice at 8:00, be back by game time.
2. Leave Rice at 9:30, miss most of the game.
If there is interest in both options, both will be run. So, make sure you email me back if you plan to come and tell me which schedule you prefer.
Thanks,
Garrett

Hey everyone, it's great to have you on board for another year of Rice sailing! I know you're all excited to get out on the water, so here's what's going on to start the season:
-This Thursday the 6th is an introductory team meeting, where you'll get to learn a little bit of what we do during the year. We'll meet at 7:00 in the Will Rice PDR (off of the Will Rice commons)
-Saturday the 8th will be our first practice of the year. We invite everyone to come out to start learning how to sail. We will meet in front of Baker college at 9:15 to carpool to the yacht club and probably return to Rice about 4:00.
RSVP
We hope to see as many of you as possible this Thursday and Saturday!
Thanks,

Congratulations to all who came out to district champs this weekend. We put in a great effort, continuing to improve with an 8th place out of 10 finish. Thanks to Nancy, Jim and Alex for coming out for the two-day trip to Austin and putting in great races.
A reminder, we have a short get-together on Thursday where we'll eat food, elect new officers, meet our new advisor Amanda and say goodbye to Marie, our previous one. Come to the Will Rice PDR (at the end of the commons) at 7:30.
Also, this Saturday is our last sail of the year. Come out for a fun day on the water with 420's to take it easy before finals. Anyone who hasn't been able to come at all yet, this weekend is perfect for you.

SEISA District Championships

April 21-22, 2007
REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
Saturday:
It was overcast with temperatures around 70 and winds from the SE at 12-18 with gusts up to 25. Ten teams attended and ten races per division were completed by 1930. There was only one breakdown, and I would like to say thank you to the UT team members who assisted on the chase boat helping the periodic flipped boats throughout the day.
Sunday:
Sunday was also overcast with winds out of the SE in the morning shifting to S in the afternoon. Winds were 5-12 with the wind building throughout the day. Racing began shortly after 0930 and due to the 10-15 hour treks of several of the teams, a cut off time of 1400 was established on Sunday. Six races in each division were completed by the cut off time.
I would like to express many thanks to Steve Gay for serving as our PRO and volunteering his time all weekend. I would also like express special thank Ben Davis for helping with scoring on land, Justin Ogden for his assistance on the race committee boat, and all other UT sailing members who helped make the weekend as smooth as possible. Another thanks goes out to all nine teams who traveled to Austin from as far east as West Florida and as far north as Kansas to make this event the best it could be.
Congratulations to the sailing teams from Texas A&M Galveston and the University of South Alabama for qualifying for nationals.
-Mark Hulings

Hey team,
Congratulations to Rice sailing for a great finish at the Aggie spring regatta this weekend. You can see the results here. The team has showed really great improvement very quickly. Who knows how much farther we can get with just a little more practice and racing.
There is no event this Saturday, but come on out to the activities fair on Friday evening and help us advertise the club at our booth. The next weekend is spring recess, but there will still be some people around who are going out to the yacht club for practice. If you are
interested in going with this crew one day over break, please let me know by early next week.
The rest of the season after that looks like this:
-On April 14th we will get to participate in a clinic and miniature regatta among Houston Yacht Club members.
-April 21st is district championships at UT.
-April 28th will be a fun year-end sail with a big boat and a good time on the water.
Have a great rest of your Willy Week.

March 24, 2007
REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
All teams arrived around 9:00. Thanks is due to Baylor and UNT who each
brought a boat to accomodate all of the teams. After getting all of the
boats set up, races started around 9:45 in light breeze. The first 4 races
in each division were done in light shifty breeze around 5-8mph. The rest of
the races were sailed in in puffy and shifty 10-15mph breeze.
We did 10 races of W/L once around, and the last race in each division was a
W/L twice around. Every race proved to be relatively close. There seemed to
be a pack up front and a pack in the back. Regardless, each pack was very
close and there were many entanglements at both mark roundings which made
for exciting races.
I would like to thank the parents of Kimberley Kackley and Nathan Hartwell
for helping us out on race commitee. I'd also like to thank Nathan Hartwell,
James Harrington, and Cory Couch for driving the markset boat, even though
it broke down numerous times during the day. A final thanks to all of the
teams who came down and made this a fun and large regatta.

Sailing team members,
This coming weekend is the Barnyard Bizarre regatta at Texas A&M. So
far we have 5 people signed up to go, but we can definitely take more,
so let me know soon if you want to come. We'll meet at 7:15 Saturday
morning in front of Baker, and return around 8 or 9 that night.
In other news, the Club Sports department is still accepting
applications for the Club Sports committee, which determines the
funding of all club sports. An application is available at
http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~ricerec/club_sports/csc_form.html
Also, if you're looking for a summer job, the club has recieved flyers
for several sailing summer camp staff positions that a few of you may
be interested in. Two can be found at
http://www.capecodseacamps.com/ and http://www.sailcaribbean.com/
Let me know if you want more of the information.
Thanks,
Garrett

I hope everyone had a great break. Now that we're back, practice will
be this Saturday the 17th. Anyone is welcome to come. Meet as ususal
in front of Baker at 9:30. Also, the next Saturday the 24th will be a
regatta at A&M College Station. We'll leave that morning, sail all
day, and come back that night. Please let me know this week if you
plan to come out there.
Thanks,
Garrett

There will be no practice this Saturday the 3rd or next Saturday the 10th due to Spring Break. If anyone is in town this Saturday and wants to help a few of us go buy parts and work on boats, let me know. Practice will resume on the 17th.
Also, the Club Spots department is now accepting applications to be on next year's Club Sports Committee, which deals largely with budget allocation to club sports. Please read the description below and consider applying.
--
The Club Sports Committee (CSC) works with each club sport to assess and review their budget needs, provide advice for fund raising and fiscal responsibility, and to allocate the club sports budget to each team. Student representatives spend a considerable amount of time at the beginning of the fall semester meeting with team representatives to explain the budget
process, review club budgets and provide non-partisan recommendations for allocation of the club sports funds.
The application is available online
It is due by Wednesday, March 21, 2007.
Have a great break.

Hey, team.
Rice sailing has just been given some extra funding for
equipment. As such, this coming weekend we are looking for people to
come out and help us pick up parts and fix up boats. This workday will
replace practice this coming Saturday. Meet at 9:30 at Baker.
Have a great week.

2/13/07
Great news from the sailing team! This past weekend Rice sailing
continued its rapid improvement with a very respectable finish at A&M
Galveston. The team was competitive with the main fleet all day long,
and finished ahead of several schools in the overall standings for
our B division races.
Contrary to our original plans, we will no longer be attending the SMU
clinic this weekend. Instead, there will be practice on Saturday. So,
meet at Baker at 9:30, and come on out to sharpen your skills.
As long as we're talking changes in the schedule, please note that
there will be no practice on April 7th due to Spring Recess.
That's all for now. Meet in front of Baker at 9:30 on Saturday.
Thanks,
Garrett
